The vast wooded area in Staffordshire, England, called Cannock Chase, has been known for many years, in addition to its natural beauty, for its varied legends, which still attract many amateur and professional investigators and mystery scientists. Starting with more well-known stories about UFOs, aliens or ghosts.
Penkridge UFO Crash[]
In 1964, the Cannock Chase area made headlines after some witnesses claimed that a UFO had crashed in a field near the town of Penkridge. Three small extraterrestrial beings were allegedly found after the crash, but the army and NATO tried to keep the whole case secret at all costs. A local witness named Harold South claimed to have seen the entire event as he drove past the field. The man swore he saw soldiers loading the broken machine, covered by a waterproof jacket, onto a transporter. He allegedly managed to take some photos, but they were confiscated by the British Air Force.
The public learned about the details of the case only in 1991, when a former member of the US Air Force named Leonard Stringfield spoke. He claimed that the UFO was monitored as it moved irregularly over the territory of Europe. The majority of the UFO fell into Cannock Chase, while a smaller part continued in a chaotic flight and ended up somewhere in the territory of Germany. Over Cannock Chase, locals have often seen UFOs over Cannock Chase since then - are they perhaps extraterrestrials trying to track down their lost machine? The case remained unsolved and is still nicknamed the "British Roswell".
Ghosts of Castle Ring Hillfort[]
In addition to strange creatures, Cannock Chase is also proud of "classic" ghost stories, which often focus on a fortress over 2000 years old called Castle Ring hillfort. The history of this place also included rituals and sacrifices, and witnesses often speak of both dark and light figures roaming the area. Strange sounds such as hammer blows, singing or ancient music are also a known phenomenon. In 2006, an unusual story about the "lady from Chase" appeared again. A woman named Linda was driving home at night when a figure of a woman appeared in the middle of the road in front of her. Linda claimed the woman had gray skin and was naked, but saw no signs of genitalia. The mysterious woman looked at Linda with large hypnotic eyes for a moment, the witness being paralyzed and unable to react at the time. After a few minutes, the strange woman turned and walked away into the forest.
Black Eyed Children[]
During one week in September 2014, the British tabloid Daily Star ran three sensationalistic front-page stories about alleged sightings of black-eyed children, connected to the sale of a supposedly haunted pub in Staffordshire. The paper claimed a "shock rise in sightings around the world". Alleged sightings are taken seriously by ghost hunters, some of whom believe black-eyed children to be extraterrestrials, vampires, or ghosts.
