The Flannan Isles Lighthouse is a European Location that came to prominence after the Disappearance of three Lighthouse keepers in 1900. The disappearance is shrouded in legend as the details are inconsistent and the reported diary entries are contradictory and disturbing. The three men Were James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald MacArthur
Description[]
The log Described a storm. It also described how one of them was oddly quiet and Donald MacArthur was crying. Two Contradictions are displayed as there was no reported storm at the time, (in fact weather reports said it was calm) as well as the fact that Donald MacArthur was crying. Which was odd because he was in the military and was seen as a strong individual. A later log post said they were scared for their life. Strange given that the lighthouse was constructed in 1899. Just a year earlier. The last entry written in the log simply said "Storm Is Quiet, Sea Is Calm, God Is Watching All". By the time a crew arrived on December 26th for supplies no one was on the Island. They reportedly tried blowing the horn and sent a flare, but to no response. When they rowed to shore they found two of the three lifejackets were missing and a half eaten meal which look like they were in a hurry. To this day no bodies have ever been found of the three.
Possible Explanations[]
There are several explanations as to what the creature could be. Theories include:
- Tall Tale/Hoax
- Murder/Suicide
- A demonic presence
- Paranoia/Insanity
- An alien abduction
Trivia[]
- The first record that something was abnormal on the Flannan Isles was on 15 December 1900 when the steamer Archtor, on a passage from Philadelphia to Leith, noted in its log that the light was not operational in poor weather conditions. When the ship docked in Leith on 18 December 1900, the sighting was passed on to the Northern Lighthouse Board. The relief vessel, the lighthouse tender Hesperus, was unable to sail from Breasclete, Lewis, as planned on 20 December due to adverse weather; it did not reach the island until noon on 26 December. The lighthouse was manned by three men: James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald McArthur, with a rotating fourth man spending time on shore.
- On arrival, the crew of the Hesperus and the relief keeper found that the flagstaff had no flag, none of the usual provision boxes had been left on the landing stage for re-stocking, and more ominously, none of the lighthouse keepers were there to welcome them ashore. Jim Harvie, the captain of Hesperus, attempted to reach them by blowing the ship's whistle and firing a flare, but was unsuccessful.
- A boat was launched and Joseph Moore, the relief keeper, was put ashore alone. He found the entrance gate to the compound and the main door both closed, the beds unmade, and the clock unwound. Returning to the landing stage with this grim news, he then went back up to the lighthouse with Hesperus's second-mate and a seaman. A further search revealed that the lamps had been cleaned and refilled. A set of oilskins was found, suggesting that one of the keepers had left the lighthouse without them. There was no sign of any of the keepers, neither inside the lighthouse nor anywhere on the island.
