The Flatwoods Monster, also known as the Braxton County monster or the Phantom of Flatwoods, sighting was an alien sighting that took place during September 12, 1952 reported to have been sighted in the town of Flatwoods, West Virginia, on September 12, 1952. The incident occurred after witnesses observed a bright light crossing the night sky. Over 50 years later, investigations suggest that the light was likely a meteor while the creature was potentially a barn owl perched in a tree with shadows creating the illusion of a large humanoid figure.
Appearance[]
The figure was approximately 10 feet tall with specific characteristics like glowing eye-like shapes emitting greenish-orange light and a dark-colored body. May described it as having claw-like hands and clothing-like folds with a head resembling an ace of spades. When Lemon illuminated the area with his flashlight and saw this figure approaching emitting hissing sounds, he dropped his flashlight in fright causing everyone to flee from the scene.
Trivia[]
- In 2000, Joe Nickell from the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry conducted an investigation into this case. Nickell concluded that the bright light witnessed on September 12 was likely a meteor while suggesting that the pulsating red light could have been an aircraft navigation or hazard beacon. Furthermore, he proposed that what witnesses perceived as the monster closely resembled an owl and that their heightened anxiety might have distorted their perceptions during the event.
