Backgrounds[]
In November 2002, the Griggstown Cow, which had been a mysterious figure in New Jersey folklore for three decades, was discovered to be a living black and white bull. The cow had been reported to inhabit the Millstone River floodplain and the Griggstown Lock of the Delaware and Raritan Canal in Griggstown, central New Jersey. Initially thought to be an urban legend akin to the Loch Ness Monster or the Jersey Devil, sightings of this “ghost cow” were sporadic and often on foggy nights or times of poor visibility. Despite many tales from locals about encountering this elusive cow, no tracks or concrete evidence were ever found until its discovery in 2002.
On November 23, 2002, a New Jersey Water Authority employee reported seeing the Griggstown Cow lying in a ravine near the canal. Subsequently, employees from various agencies were dispatched to investigate and found an old bull that matched the description of the legendary cow. The bull was too weak to get out of the ditch where it had fallen, leading to its rescue by responders. However, due to its poor health condition as determined by a local veterinarian, the decision was made to euthanize the animal. The bull was buried near its roaming grounds at the Griggstown lock, solidifying its place in New Jersey folklore.
