The Khamar-Daban Incident is a tragic event that occurred on August 5, 1993, in the Khamar-Daban mountain range in southern Siberia, Russia. This incident involved a group of seven hikers led by an experienced instructor, Lyudmila Korovina. The group consisted of six students and Korovina herself. While hiking, they encountered severe weather conditions and ultimately faced a mysterious series of events that led to the deaths of six members of the group.

Description[]

Khamar-Daban mountain range is known for its rugged terrain and is a popular destination for hikers and tourists. In the summer of 1993, Korovina organized a hiking trip with her students from the Petropavl “Azimut” tourist club. The group was well-prepared and had trained together prior to the trip. They began their hike on August 2, 1993, but on August 4, they were caught in an unexpected rainstorm while descending from Retranslyator peak.

After setting up camp in an exposed area during the storm, the group struggled to stay warm and dry. On August 5, they managed to start a fire and have breakfast before continuing their descent. However, as they descended from an altitude of approximately 2,396 meters (7,861 feet), one of the hikers, Aleksander Krysin, began exhibiting alarming symptoms: he screamed in agony while bleeding from his eyes and ears before collapsing.

Korovina rushed to help Krysin but soon exhibited similar symptoms herself. Other members of the group also began to collapse under mysterious circumstances—some displaying violent convulsions or attempting to tear off their clothing before dying. Valentina Utochenko was the only survivor; she fled down the mountain after witnessing these traumatic events.

Theories[]

  • An hypothermia
  • A altitude sickness
  • An nerve agents
  • A contaminated water
  • An mushroom poisoning
  • A military experimentation

Trivia[]

  • Upon recovery, autopsies revealed that five hikers died from hypothermia while Korovina suffered a heart attack attributed partially to malnutrition. Notably, all deceased hikers showed signs of bruised lungs.
