Langville, Montana was supposedly a small rural town which "disappeared" in the early 2000's, and of which online discussion and evidence has been apparently erased, appearing in Google search autocomplete and recommended search options under intriguing titles such as "Langville, Montana Incident", "Langville, Montana Disappeared", and, most bizarrely, "Langville, Montana Turned Inside Out." Yet on clicking these links the search yielded nothing, leading investigators to suspect that "not only had this town disappeared, but all data on it was being expunged from the internet."
The story has become an Internet Legend and was later referenced in a recent Ghostbusters sequel. While it remains likely that a kind of publicity campaign was involved in the suggest searches, some locals have claimed that the rumors of a vanished town in Montana are longstanding, while others claim to remember Langville, though only vaguely, "as if on the periphery of known memory."
In fact, shortly after the movies release several reviews from Montana locals noted the review to the town, referencing it as a real place, whether ironically or in earnest.
Possible explanations[edit | edit source]
- A real vanished town, whether supernaturally or conspiratorially erased or a combination. The most common story is that the victims were "turned inside out".
- A hoax or publicity stunt for the Ghostbusters film which mentioned it. However Montanans wrote in reviews of the film that Langville was already a local legend.
