On the evening of June 9, 1912, someone entered the home and proceeded to murder the entire family as they slept. The killer also took the lives of Lena and Ina Stillinger, who were friends of the Moore children and had been staying overnight. The bodies were discovered the following morning by a neighbor who became concerned after noticing that the usually active household had not begun their morning chores.
The murders shocked the small town of Villisca and garnered national attention.
